If we want as many people as possible to be able to view our site, then I feel following "the mans" idea of what is the standard is the way a beginner should go. html 5 is years from completion and is unlikely to allow unclosed tags such as that is allowed in html 4.01 Then again I am the newb and I have come to you for your seasoned opinions.
Simple semantics aside, writing xhtml and validating forces a newb such as myself to be very strict with the code. In the long run (hopefully) this will result in a better understanding and adaptability to changes in the standards. The only reason I use the term standards is because browser manufactures are bound to completely drop many rules and tags from their tool box.
