The separation of style and content with CSS actually makes things much easier for a search engine to interpret, since the focus should be on HTML that is used for meaning rather than HTML used for presentation. The benefit of using these tags in terms of SEO is at best, very debatable. Semantically speaking, they're meaningless. "Bold" and "italic" are visual instructions - there's still <em> and <strong> which are explicitly designed to a convey something meaningful, with or without visual aids.
