I know what semantics is - I'm just not seeing a connection to semantics and to what your saying. Not that I care much about semantics in the first place though - I care about what is applicable and efficient in the real world. I follow standards up to the point that they start to conflict with other details of web design - like maintainability. Maintainability - to me - is far more important than standards. They should go hand in hand - but they don't.
