haven't studied all of asks image, I don't think the white space is all that much of an issue simply the mere fact that it's one image is the point of it .. anyway I imagine the reason for the whitespace is what I referred to earlier in that when creating a sprite from "irregular" images you would have to allow for text resizing and that a part of another part of the sprite/image won't overlap into anothers space
e.g. despite what the video says, this is the actual image used on yahoo [us.i1.yimg.com] - you can't really make a successful sprite by just cramming the image together - if you go to Yahoo.com home page and look at the menu in the left sidebar.. if you zoom the text up a few sizes (quite a few so I'm not saying it's an issue) the icons on the right side of the sprite eventually start to show on the right of the menu items
The 'ask' example does that, though again I've not looked at what bits do what, the ingredients are there - the whole of that sprite has a rounded/shaded border and that can be used to create rounded boxes - the rounded multicolored search boxes are also in there, then see that square shaded bit with the white dot in the middle.. that's four corners together, I think it's the ones used on the main background of the home page.
