hi thesheep,
i have found it very convenient to spend some time to sit with the designer and give him/her some insight about the problems i (as a front-end developer) might encounter with some designs.

the conversation most often sums up as DOs and DON'Ts for a web-designer. i explain what can be done, what can't be done and what can be done but will take a lot of time to do.

FWIW i have gathered a lot of points on the subject throughout my career as a front-end developer and took the time to integrate them into a document/article for referral.

problem is, it's written in Hebrew, so it could take me some time to translate it. yet if there is clear need for it i will be more than happy to take some time on the weekend and translate it into English.
