I suspect that organic ad growth on adwords is getting tapped out.
Since Google has confined it to two or three ads in most of the areas I traverse, to drive up prices, I would think that may be so in quite a few categories now.
I wonder what's next. Probably:
We have observed that the display of your websites URL in Adwords Ads is benefical to your users. Many of them type the address directly in their browsers address bar instead of clicking on the ads. Therefore we have decided to charge you every time a user types your URL in the address bar.
That one had me smiling. Don't give them any more ideas.
