I see you mention Meta tags, are they still worth doing at all, my understanding was that google for example just ignored them?
"Meta tags" is a collective noun bandied about with wild abandon, which contributes to confusion about this. In SEO terms, it usually refers to the keywords and description meta elements. It could also include the robots element and perhaps a couple of others.
Writing a good description has direct and measurable benefits. I have yet to see a change in performance on a major search engine as a result of use or omission of the keywords element.
The title is an element all of it's own, and is not a meta element.
For any SEO that works with a code, I think The global structure of an HTML document [w3.org] should be required reading ;)
