It's my first post at WebmasterWorld -))

My thoughts about title tag:
I'm using something about 65-70 characters
Never Using "stop" separators like "!" "." "?" "..."
Only "-" "," "¦" etc.

If you're writing title for startpoint page, you have to remember that SE will put your title tag to snippet, so it have to be surfer friendly! The same about description.
