Of course everyone will agree that the '26 steps to 15k a day' is a good guide to basic seo. Basic seo should always be followed but unfortunately not everyone can be on the first page of results. So you have to experiment and go beyond the fundamental rules in order to be competitive. This is where people start to disagree on how to do seo and that's never going change.

My approach is to create multiple sites for the same vertical. Some are safe and hopefully these KISS projects stay at the top. Others are aggresive and used to learn how to go beyond the fundamentals. I lost about 30 million pages that were indexed in Google due to the Allegra update but I'm glad it happened. I would much rather be in a situation where sites get banned and I'm learning from it rather than one where I put all my faith in Google's guidelines and learn nothing. Plus it was pretty funny.
