I think the pics would be a very, very bad idea. Pictorial navigation is always a bad idea as people can't always traslate pictures to the correct words. Yeah, yeah, you can scroll over the pics to read the words, but one more step for users means they take one more step towards going somewhere else.

Somtimes a word is worth a thousand pictures.
