Apple has many extremely loyal users, the marketing of the products is great.
There aren't a lot of companies tha can pull this off. Bose comes to mind too. Audoiphiles would never buy their speakers, but their marketing department has convinced the average Joe that their over-priced equipment is a great deal.
Perception is reality for the consumer, so it's a win-win.
BTW - All of my family members owns Bose equipment and I've never said anything negative about that company to them. That said, they all looked at me like I was a cheapskate when they saw my PSB speakers. (They have no idea how much I paid for them...).
