So you're talking about pre-selling a book that YOU write? I thought you were talking about pre-selling general books.

As a consumer buying directly from the author, I'd be wondering why I couldn't buy directly from the author at a cheaper price than through Amazon.

I'd be surprised if Amazon doesn't have something in place to factor in a lot of orders placed by the same person and discounting those orders in its ranking process.
