A "fire and forget" approach to site building is unlikely to generate much income unless you are a particularly skilled author and are writing on the right topic. Typically a site has to be kept fresh and actively promoted.
There are exceptions but the general concensus seems to be that site visitors are far less likely to click on ads than they were 5 years ago. I know that my sites now take in a month slightly less than they took in a week when I first monetised them. Luckily the sites support real world activities, the income is a bonus not the reason for creating them.
