Personally, I'm more visual, so I often sit down with my favorite design program and layout a home page so I can 'see the idea' and this process usually defines some of the things you have outlined and 'highlights' some of the other items you have which will need to be dealt with before converting the idea to a working website, so I guess I sort of do the same thing, only different...

Again, great post on how it could (should) be done though.
