I've managed to get around 25 one way inbound links from sites on topic, using good achor text where possible. I also include a strong selection of outbound on topic links.
Most of our traffic still comes from google image searches which is strange given that we have around 500+ files of written content with around 250,000 words online.
I am a professional writer and though it is a competitive field we're aiming for alternative, controversial content.
I think i use the title and headers more or less correctly, i have only one meta description on the first page and no meta keywords as i think google will see it as over seo.
I'll take the advice and focus on links more, 1 in 20 is a pretty tough ratio!
The only thing that occurred to me is that because it is a large informational site perhaps it's harder for google to understand on exactly what topic to place the site.
If anyone has the time to have a look i can sticky the url.
