I'd already done 'proper' programming (PL/1, C++ etc.) before, so HTML wasn't too difficult to grasp, but to be honest, I kind of fell into web development more by chance than design.
I was working as a print graphic designer, and we were increasingly getting asked to design websites by the same clients who we were doing brochures and folders for. While we originally contracted this work out, I eventually bit the bullet and taught myself HTML while building my first client site, using a text editor and Photoshop 4 on an early G3 Mac. There were frames, JavaScript rollovers and poorly compressed JPEGs, but for the time it looked pretty good.
