It sounds like you let Photoshop or Fireworks generate the html for you, creating lots of rowspans and colspans in a fragile layout that breaks easily.

If this is the case, unfortunately, there's no quick fix for that type of code. It has nothing to do with your use of a template, and everything to do with the structure of the underlying code. You'll need to spend some time creating the template yourself in Dreamweaver, using your Photoshop-generated images but structuring your code so that it allows for the addition of text and other content in your editable area without breaking.
