Depends on your level experience. If you're a programmer, phonegap is the way to go. Phonegap will allow you to publish to iPhone, droid and a few others with very little change in your code. And if you are good with HTML5, Jquery and Ajax, you can create some really awesome stuff and then compile to an app for submission.

No monthly fees, and you can make your app do exactly what you want it to do.

If you're not a programmer, then those canned services are good for basic apps however you will not be able to develop apps that have much depth to them other than the options those services have.
