That comment reflects a common misconception. Simplifying and streamlining the language used does not ... repeat not ... necessarily mean that the actual information being conveyed is dumbed down. Ponder the difference between calling something a "manually operated horticultural excavation implement" or "calling a spade a spade". Ten-dollar words are like adding spices to your cooking. Too much can make the dish indigestible. However, you don't need to be afraid of the occasional big, uncommon word if it truly conveys something essential that a more common word would miss, and the context makes the meaning clear. The best way to use big words is sparingly. If your overall writing style is clear, simple, and direct, an occasional big word ... exactly the right word ... need not cause indigestion. If it is skilfully presented, it can leave the reader with the pleasure of learning something new. Like so many things in life, keep a light hand about it and you'll be okay.
