My first internet connection via a Linux system :)
I have some free time on my hands so I finally got around to messing with Linux. I've re-purposed my old desktop as a learning device.
My original intent was to try out Ubuntu 12.10 for Desktop but after a lengthy install that appeared to go well it appeared to have a problem with the display and I couldn't get anywhere with it.
So now I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 Server LTS to match the OS I'm using on my live webserver. I just want to get really reckless with it in ways I obviously cannot do on a production server.
But a funny thing happened along the way. I discovered a minimalist GUI called XUbuntu, installed it, and here I am on WW via a server configuration.
This stuff is way kewl! For you old timers who have been using Linux for many years should I be feeling giddy?! I am feeling giddy.
System is a bit slow though but not unexpected running on 1.8Ghz and 256MB of RAM. In the attempts to get the desktop version running I removed my 256MB dual display video card and re-enabled the onboard 64MB video card. That still didn't get me in business but now that I have a GUI via XUbuntu I'm going to try reinstalling my 256MB PCI video card to try and milk a bit more performance out of this thing.
And wow, I can still run my command line server configurations (that I really want to learn intensively) through a terminal emulator.
