Also: Just discovered, in dconf editor, a switch for Nautilus under org / gnome / gedit / filebrowser

(NOTE: this is dconf not gconf, of which there are at least two flavours, one foe Mint's version of gnome and one for Mate.)

Click-Policy was set to double: now set to Single. Also, there is a filter under the filebrowser tab itself: I've now removed hide-hidden from it and am hoping.

Also show-hidden found under org / gtk / settings / filechooser - now ticked. - that's the one that works for hidden folders under gedit! :) (but sadly not in Kate)

Haven't yet rebooted so can't tell if other apps will respond and if so how. I'll report back.
