Why are you compiling programs yourself, rather than installing from the repositaries? ImageMagick (and often its fork graphicsmagick) is available from the repos for every distro I have used. There are also GUI front ends for it, and photo management programs like Digikam can also batch resize.

Why is it that in 2009 it's still so hard to just download something and installing it by typing one command?

That sounds so like a description of installing from repos that I wonder if you are trolling.
