You can get an indication of the bottlenecks serving your site with the Yahoo yslow FireFox plugin. There is a thread dedicated to yslow [webmasterworld.com].
Site speed is affected by many things. The server load, the size of the data pipe to the internet, the number of files that have to be transfered to the client, the speed of retrieving info from a database attached to the site, etc.
