If you are able to get online once it boots, check that you have at least two valid DNS servers listed in /etc/resolve.conf, and that the machine's IP address is listed in /etc/hosts.
I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu, but usually when Linux hangs during boot, if it's not a hardware issue, it's because it's having trouble getting to the Internet.
