My best guess is Yahoo bought Ink, Alltheweb and Altavista more for the programming know-how. Thus, while Yahoo may use Ink, the new Inktomi will be using algos which are partially developed by ATW and Alltheweb programmers. Altavista still has some brand value, and for that reason they may not want to kill it. However, I can see Ink and ATW merged into one.
