I was here a few months back. You can keep cranking that stuff up or switch to Imagick/ImageMagick, it's the stuff.

To predict the uncompressed size you need to be able to read it, to read it . . . well you know, chicken and egg.

I started here [webmasterworld.com], then wound up here [webmasterworld.com]. After working through the problems with Imagick/Imagemagick, there's just no going back to the GD toolkit, even for smaller images. :-)
