Personally I'd be looking at "low end" Canon DSLR and they are within your price range.
Just remember MP doesn't = Quality. Any pro is going to take a good camera over one with lot of MP's although the new pro cameras have plenty of it. I know a guy who does photography and he has a old Canon camera that is only something like 2.5MP and he said he'd take it over a higher point and shoot anyday. Better censor technology and glass..
