Thanks for the great post. I have had my favicon.ico on all my sites for some time but I was not aware that you could use the <link> tag as well.

Yes it works without it, but switch icons or add one where there wasn't one before and you will see that without the <link> tag it takes a long time to detect it where as it seemed faster with the <link> tag.
