Much of what you say is fairly mainstream, really.

page rank IS overrated; links and the need to get thousands, is pure obsession - but getting listed in a few quality directories is a good way to kick-start any site.

Keyword packing is also an over-rated pastime, though it keeps people off the strret, so maybe it's ok.

Much better to have a good and interesting site that people will want to visit, and you'd be surprised how easily it will take a life of its own. SEO can help a site - but it's a quality site that does most of the work.
