I agree that the portal models have been very successful in Asia. To a certain degree I think that they need it more in China, Korea & Japan than elsewhere. Of course the key will not just be AJAX gimmicks, but quality of the services offered.

I can't really judge the quality of this new directory yet. One would hope that it will be better than the DMOZ implementation. I'm sure that the SEO/SEM people will be happy to have a new channel to get their sites listed in Google.
