I have been doing SEO (or variants thereof) for almost 6 years now. About a year ago, an associate and I started a local SEO company.....an offshoot of his company (I'm in America, he's in another first world country).
He passed down all of his SEO clients to me. About 6 of them. Blammo, a profitable company in less than 1 month after incorporating.
Well, over the past year or so the 6 clients have turned into 3. One client went belly up (not due to our efforts) and the other two couldn't understand why we weren't able to get them page 1 rankings even though they refused to perform on-site SEO (they thought that backlinks alone should do the trick).
Anyways, the question I have is this:
I'm at a bit of a crossroads now.....I have an ecommerce site that I own (it's losing money, but I bought it that way from the previous owner and am confident I can get it back up to where it should be) and this SEO company that's basically hanging by a string.
With the current state of SEO (in 2012 and where it's headed) and all the challenges associated with landing SEO clients (not to mention finding decent leads), would you guys recommend I hang up my hat and instead focus entirely upon the ecommerce site?
I don't have a lot of bandwith for both companies....and I have been told I should just focus on one for best chances of success.
Another big challenge I'm facing with the SEO company.....is trying to find good leads. There was this one company my ex-partner found that sold once-stepped on (by a ppc company) leads for $20/pop.
I called a few of them for a "free 30 minute SEO site audit" they signed up for and the response I got was "Who are you, and how did you get my number?"
Thanks if you guys can shed any light or perhaps give me some motivating thoughts either way.
