My business partner has a blog whose home page ranks fairly well for some very competitive two word terms in the mortgage space. The posts themselves also rank very well for their targeted longer tail keyword phrases. He is also a syndicated columnist for the McClatchy Tribute Wire Service (the owner of a large number of newspapers around the country).
About 5-6 months ago we set him up with G+ account and implemented authorship for both all of his newspaper columns at McClatchy as well as all posts on his blogs. There is a byline on every post as well as every custom excerpt on the home page of his blog.
For months the rich authorship snippets (with his photo) were showing both for the home page and posts pretty much anytime one of them ranked. But suddenly a couple of weeks ago, the authorship snippet stopped showing anytime the home page ranks. The authorship snippet, however, still shows for the actual post pages almost every time they rank.
And I've also noticed the last couple of days that the number of rich authorship snippets being shown for those highly competitive phrases has gone WAY down. Used to be every page had 2 authorship snippets. Today I'm having to go back 3 pages to find the first one.
I understand that Google doesn't guarantee they will show the snippet even when you've implemented it... and that they may show the snippet sometimes for a keyword phrases and not show it other times for the exact same keyword phrases.
And I guess that it kind of makes sense that they would show it for posts but not show it for a home page URL for a blog since you actually "author" the posts themselves but the home page of a blog is typically a bunch of excerpts (his are all custom) for the posts themselves. And the home page on many blogs "could" contain bylines for multiple authors that have implemented authorship markup.
Anyway... I am just curious if others with blogs who have implemented authorship markup had noticed that Google stopped showing authorship snippets when their blog home page ranked. And also if you noticed a dramatic decrease in the past few days of authorship snippets.
