Sounds symptomatic of what happens when operating in a niche so uncompetitive that link building is optional.
Am I the only one here who doesn't do "link-building"?
HuskyPup: I have never in 16+ years not once asked anyone for a link...
What I got out of that discussion is that your situation was neither universal nor instructive for how others should approach the problem of links. Wheel observed that link building is mandatory for some businesses. I agree. Wheel also made an accurate prediction:
If you're in in a niche wandering around blissfully not having to build links? You may get a wake up call someday if/when an SEO strong company walks into your niche and walks all over you. You should be planning against that eventuality now.
What is happening now in your SERPs may be a reflection of how low the barrier to entry is. Because of that, what is happening in your niche is neither universal nor applicable to niches that have stronger competition. It's not a question of "What is Google on." It's simply that your niche has a low barrier to entry and this is a reflection of that reality.
