I'm not sure if your observations are talking about indexing or ranking. They are two separate steps, two separate things.
the more competitive the keywords/page content the longer it takes Google to index?
That sounds like you might be talking about ranking. If you are talking about indexing, I'd say that's a myth. But certainly, a competitive query term can take a good bit longer to get well ranked.
I am not seeing much in the way of new visitor traffic from them.
Are you seeing ANY traffic coming from Google Search? If you are, then clearly the pages are indexed.
