I agree that good content is important but by itself it will likely fail.
Imagine building a great mansion deep in the woods and not building a single road or trail to it. It does not matter how great your mansion is, no one will visit. If you build great content you need to support it with backlink development. That backlink development can be as simple as emailing a few people or mentioning it on twitter. Really, really great content just needs a little push and it will virally grow and attract people and links.
That being said if you do not have great content then it is a very hard challenge to gain backlinks since no one wants to link to garbage. So to help backlink development you should have great (not good or average) content so it will be easier to convince people to link to your content.
I disagree that traditional SEO is about spam but let us keep this discussion focused on how writing can help with indexing and ranking.
