ciml done a lot of work on this about 10 years ago and iirc he mentioned that experiments were of limited use so far along the chain; googlebot would lose interest. i imagine purely redirects would fare the same or worse.


i think a lot of redirects are entirely unnecessary and would be better served by an internal rewrite. redirects are just lazy in many cases ;o)

browser events, non-www to www and one domain to another are three major ones I can think of as decent cases. even non-www to www seems unnecessary given the availability of the canonical tag.
