I think a site is taken as a whole and inbound links are part of the picture.
One page ranking affects the other pages ranking, and the overall authority of a site affects its pages' SERPs.
Links to one page affecting another page with zero inbound links.
When you post a page on WSJ, it gets a different 'treatment' by Google than if the same page were posted on your site.
As for user experience and returning visits, G is way far from being accurate but they seem trying to go on this direction, hopefully.
