My unmaintained sites are showing huge spikes of traffic, while my bread & butter sites are dying off.

I see the same thing. The stie we put lots of hours in got a hard hit again. My second/third site gained a lot of keys. One site is affiliate only and gives no extra content nor high user expirience.

Maybe on 27th was the annual Christmas shift? We have seen this every year now.
