I've noticed those pages where I copied the title into the H1 tag also didn't recuperate until I changed the words around in the later. Are you saying that your document title & H1 for a given page used to be the same, but the rankings recovered once you made them different?

Yes. I noticed pages where I repeated title and H1 didn't rank well and when I changed the words around ranking improved, all other factors being acceptable, of course.
