I've seen EMDs lose traffic on long tail and associated terms after the EMD update

Again, lets' try to keep the different updates separate (as impossible as that may be). An exact match domain can only be an exact match domain for one search term. So, if you are losing traffic for multiple terms you more probably have been hit by the Penguin update that happened at the same time.
