Is it me or is the term "knowledge graph" completely misleading as to what it really is? Since it's content Google didn't write inserted onto their results pages there isn't much "graph" to it.

It's actually "knowledge grab", but one of the CEOs had a speech impediment and the engineers misunderstood... :)
