If you are looking at this as a shortcut or a trick then you are probably not going to do this right. If you look at this as market expansion and promoting your brand then you are probably going to do ok.

Sometimes I launch multiple sites going after the same industry and same keyword. I make sure each site offers unique value and has a clear purpose.

For example one site can be an e-commerce site with consumer reviews and how-to guides. Another site can be more news/blog oriented. I would not replicate the backlink profile 100% for the sites. Sure some backlinks will be duplicated and point to both of my sites. But I will leverage the unique value of each site to open the door at as many valuable websites as possible. For example bloggers tend to be more inclined to link to a blog than an e-commerce site. Product review sites tend to link to e-commerce sites more than news websites. This will ensure that each of my sites have a unique backlink profile and create a synergy between my branded sites.
