I've heard of people making this part of their Panda recovery work, but never heard of it being the only action taken and that it then caused a recovery. I personally find it unlikely to be the issue that causes a Panda demotion, but I suppose it might if the proportion of profile pages is large compared to other content.
I'd look at a couple of factors - whether the profile pages would provide real value in a search result, and whether there are lots of profile pages that are basically inactive shells.
It's not clear what kind of site you are running, however some people have exposed their forum member profiles to search only after a certain level of involvement - and therefore a certain level of content depth for the profile page.
