n00b1, I really hope that was not the reason for the penalty. I, too, participate in a technical support forum where I have a signature link to my home page, and I place various on-topic links to inner pages of my site. This generates substantial percentage of targeted traffic to my site, so I cannot see myself stopping this practice. But I would hate it if search engines would penalize me for it. They are welcome to not count those links, but why penalize? If a user asks a technical question, instead of a lot of writing, I point him in the right direction (which usually includes a few sentences and a link or two for more detailed explanation of the topic).
