if we relied on user metrics in other walks of life, like rating restaurants, then the best restaurant in town would be McDonalds, because they have the biggest brand, highest footfall and return visits -- all things which google presumably uses in their algo.
McDonalds is probably the most popular restaurant, for sure, but that doesn't mean that it's the best. maybe google is confusing the two words. or maybe they have made a deliberate choice to return the most popular sites, instead of the best (which is much more likely, in my opinion). that's probably why big brands are getting a boost.
