What obligation does Google—or any search engine for that matter—have to not rock the SEO boat? Seriously.

I think certain people have forgotten what the "SE" in SEO stands for and that those two words are the entire reason the practice of SEO even exists.

Search engines are born, search engines create the need for SEO, SEO bludgeons search engines with claims of victimization. Brilliant. Has it really come to this?

The entire concept of SEO is built on the back of existence of search engines. You have to expect that even a non-malicious shifting of the beast will throw you off if you don't have a good grasp, and certainly abusing the beast will only make it move more violently.
