I think I am in the same boat as well. My site (created in 1999) ranked well for 10 years. Never any issues. Original content, all written by me - and then in mid April it tanked. I thought maybe a 60 day penalty, then 90 penalty. Nope. I made the HUGE mistake of hiring a backlink service thinking I "needed" to do this to keep my site rankings "safe". This is something I really had never heard of or ventured into. But my thinking was...."Oh I have to do this to run with the BIG dogs..."
Jesus.... I should have just mozied along as I had for 10 years just writing quality content and doing my own little thing. Sometimes I think SEO is BS. I never did SEO and for 10 years I was fine. The first time I do something that all the SEO people are saying you need to do.... well... you know the end of this story.
