If you only 302 redirect the home page to the new domain, then you're not sending direct link equity or ranking power to the new domain root -- and the domain root usually has the lion's share of backlinks.

Google will usually not rank the target page of a 302 redirect. I'd say find a way to 301 redirect the original domain root to the new domain root.
