I've often suspected this - sometimes it seems like it has to be - and yet when I test it by sending a gmail to myself, I don't see the crawl follow. The problem otherwise, is that if i send the email to someone with the Google toolbar installed, or a Chrome user - then if they click on the link, there goes the data off the Google via another channel.
