I have a website that I am having diffuculties with and am hoping the collective intelligence/experience here can help.
A bit of history:
The website in question is around nine years old and is among the oldest ecommerce-related sites for its niche.
The first 4 years of its existence it had less that 100 pages and ranked highly.
The next 4 years it had, at various times, 1 - 5 pages. It was still in the same niche and still highly ranked.
About 6 month ago I converted it into a large ecommerce site via a CMS and it comes in at around 50,000 pages. Same niche but I hardly get any hits. On average less than 50/day. It has been optimized so I do not think there are any major problems related to SEO.
I contacted WMT recently and they said there was no manual penalty. They did make a vague reference to a change in CMS.
Is this something that will work itself out in time (kind of a sand-boxy type of thing)?
Or, by adding so many pages is the domain "ruined" - since it had so much history as a smaller site?
Would reverting the site back to its small size on the main domain, and switching the large "store" to a subdomain have any positive effect?
